The Irish Walled Towns Network is delighted to launch a new publication containing ten perspectives on the conservation and management of historic town walls.

The booklet, which covers aspects of history, archaeology, conservation, ecology, interpretation and urban design, marks twenty years since the founding of the network.

Peter Carey, IWTN Chair:

Professor Tadhg O’Keeffe’s essay in this publication describes the walling of New Ross as a collective endeavour, in which the various groups of craftspeople and citizens in the town came together to ensure the building of the town walls was successfully completed. In that same spirit of collective endeavour, the Irish Walled Towns Network has for the last twenty years been bringing together craftspeople, heritage professionals and communities to ensure that our historic town walls and our historic walled towns are safeguarded and celebrated.

This collection of essays brings together the perspectives of some of the people who have been involved in that endeavour, from archaeologists to conservation architects and ecologists to interpretation professionals. This is just a snapshot of the much wider community of care that the Network has helped to foster around town walls and walled towns since its inception.
