The Fair Green
Castledermot Medieval Festival is a FREE community event aimed at providing families with a fun and interesting way of celebrating the town’s medieval heritage.
The day starts with a guided tour of the medieval town, from St James’ Church of Ireland at 11am (lasting until about 12.30) – and then the fun begins! From 12.00 there will be a medieval village set up on the Fair Green with re-enactors showing lots of features of medieval town life including food preparation, craft working and coin making. There will also be military displays through the afternoon as well as ‘Have a Go Archery’ and even a Combat School for Kids – just in case your kids always fancied a bit of sword fighting! In another area of the Green the School of Irish Archaeology will provide a ‘Dig in a Box’ where kids can have a go at excavating a Viking house. Also on the day there will be facepainting, a ‘pig-on-a-spit’ and a Medieval Boot Throwing competition to see who will be Chief Chucker of the Day. There will be spot prizes for the best costumes on the day too.
The festival is generously funded by a grant from the Irish Walled Town Network as well as by local groups and businesses, including the Tidy Towns Committee, Castledermot Local History Group, Horan’s Mace, O’Gorman’s Butchers, Control Hydraulics Ltd, Behan’s Centra and various spot prizes and raffle prizes have also been generously donated.
